Our Vision
At Hindley Junior and Infant School, we want our pupils to grow up understanding the importance of looking after our planet. Sustainability means making choices that help protect the environment now and for the future. We encourage everyone in our school community – pupils, staff, and families – to take positive action, whether that’s saving energy, reducing waste, planting for nature, or making greener choices every day. Through learning, projects, and hands-on activities, we aim to help our pupils become environmentally responsible citizens who understand that small changes can make a big difference. Together, we are taking steps to care for our world, our school, and our future.
Whole School Actions
Our school is taking practical steps to protect the environment and teach our pupils how to make a positive difference every day. These are the key areas our school is focusing on to promote sustainability and tackle climate change:
- Decarbonisation & Travel
We encourage pupils and staff to walk, cycle, or use public transport. Initiatives such as “Walk to School Day,” Bikeability sessions, and a “Park and Stride” scheme help reduce emissions and congestion around the school. - Biodiversity & Nature
Each class leads its own sustainability initiative, from the Garden Gang in Y6 to the Turn Off Team in Y3. We host themed days, run recycling and energy campaigns, and involve families and the wider community in conservation projects. - Adaptation & Resilience
We are enhancing the school grounds with a Wildlife Garden, composting, and a wormery. Sustainability is embedded into school policies and governance, with progress monitored termly by SLT and governors. - Waste & Consumption
We prioritise reducing, reusing, and recycling. Bins are clearly labelled, pupils help monitor waste, and food waste programmes are embedded across the school. Awareness campaigns support responsible behaviour. - Climate Education & Green Careers
Sustainability is taught across the curriculum, with pupils leading eco projects and reflecting on their actions. Staff receive training, and families are engaged through tree planting, litter picks, and active travel events. - Building Sustainability
We are improving the school buildings with LED lighting, motion sensors, and water-saving taps. These steps reduce energy and water use while creating a healthier, greener learning environment.
Through these actions, we aim to create a net-zero, energy-efficient school. Pupils, staff, and families are empowered to take responsibility for the environment, helping build a sustainable school and a brighter future.

Class Eco Teams
At Hindley Junior and Infant School, we have class Eco Teams where pupils take the lead on sustainability projects:
- Y6 – Garden Gang: caring for the school grounds, planting and maintaining wildlife areas.
- Y5 – Recycling Rangers: promoting recycling across the school and helping reduce waste.
- Y4 – Litter Legends: keeping the school and playground tidy through litter picks and clean-up activities.
- Y3 – Turn Off Team: saving energy by monitoring lights and water use and encouraging everyone to switch them off when not needed.
Each team plans, leads, and monitors their projects, helping make our school a greener, more environmentally friendly place.
