Equality at Hindley Junior and Infant School
At Hindley Junior and Infant School, we are committed to equality and valuing diversity within our school community. We fundamentally believe that every person has the right to be treated with equal dignity and respect, a principle that is integral to our school ethos and underpins all that we do.
We aim to reflect these commitments in our planning, lessons, and day-to-day interactions with pupils, staff, parents and our wider community. Our goal is to develop a culture of inclusion where all members of the school community feel proud of their identity and are able to participate fully in school life.
Our Core Aims
To meet our obligations under the Public Sector Equality Duty, we work to:
- Eliminate discrimination, harassment, and victimisation.
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
- Foster good relations across all characteristics, promoting positive attitudes to difference and building strong relationships between people of different backgrounds.
Legislation and Guidance
This commitment is grounded in the Equality Act 2010, which protects individuals from discrimination based on protected characteristics, including:
- Race, disability, religion or belief, sex (gender), sexual orientation, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, and age.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Our Governing Body: Will ensure equality information and objectives are explicit in school policies, monitor their impact, and work to address any barriers to inclusion.
- The Head Teacher: Will monitor the effectiveness of the curriculum in tackling inequality, and ensure support systems are in place for all pupils to achieve their potential.
- Our Staff: Will teach a balanced curriculum that challenges stereotypes, lead by example, and promote a culture of mutual trust where everyone feels valued and listened to.
- Our Pupils: Will be supported to understand, respect, and celebrate individual differences, ensuring that everyone is included in school life.
Advancing Equality and Fostering Relations
Diversity is a strength that enriches our school life. We advance equality of opportunity by:
- Curriculum Integration: Embedding diversity across the curriculum, including a range of books and resources representing various cultures and faiths.
- Targeted Support: Using data to monitor the attainment of different groups and implementing strategies to address any underperformance or vulnerability.
- Promoting Empathy: Using assemblies and subjects like RE and PSHE to teach about British Values, protected characteristics, and the experiences of marginalised groups.
- Community Links: Working with local faith leaders and community groups to inform our approach and broaden our pupils’ perspectives.
